Magnitude 5.4 quake jolts Cagayan

 A MAGNITUDE  5.4 earthquake jolted Cagayan province on Friday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.  

The quake struck 34 km. southwest of the municipality of Calayan at 7:54 p.m. and had a depth of 29 km.
The tremor was felt at Intensity V in Calayan; Intensity III in Bacarra and Laoag, Ilocos Norte, as well as Flora, Apayao; and Intensity II in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.
Instrumental Intensity IV, or ground shaking recorded by seismic instruments, was recorded in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, and instrumental Intensity II in Vigan City.
Phivolcs said aftershocks are possible from the magnitude 5.4 quake, while damages are not expected.
Magnitude is a measure of quake size while intensity describes the degree of shaking at a given area. ( By Ma. Cristina Arayata)
