A POLICE chief of a town in Zamboanga del Norte was arrested for robbery-extortion, the anti-scalawag unit of the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Friday.
In a media statement, Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG) chief, Brig. Gen. Ronald Lee said Capt. Haran Ulah, chief of the Godod Municipal Police Station, was arrested in an entrapment operation at the police station on Thursday afternoon.
The operation stemmed from a complaint that Ulah allegedly asked PHP10,000 from a man on May 29 in exchange for him to be allowed to hunt treasures in Sitio Riverside in Barangay Raba.
“We have arrested another police officer accused of extortion in line with our continuing implementation of PNP Chief Gen. Archie Gamboa’s directive to go after rogues in uniform regardless of their rank and stature. We assure the public too that we will immediately and properly act on all complaints against erring police officers and men being forwarded to us,” Lee said.
Arresting officers from the PNP-IMEG Mindanao Field and the Provincial Intelligence Branch and Provincial Investigation and Detection Management Branch of the Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Police Office seized from the suspect PHP5,000 marked money, an M16 rifle issued to him, a cal. 45 pistol and two mobile phones.
“There will be no respite in our crackdown against police scalawags and other rogues in government service despite the ongoing strict enforcement of quarantine measures to help prevent the further spread of Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019). Walang Covid-19 sa amin kapag ang huhulihin ay iskalawag na pulis (Covid-19 is not a hindrance for us when it comes to catching scalawag policemen),” Lee said.
The suspect is now under police custody and facing administrative and criminal charges for robbery-extortion.
Lee called on the public to report the PNP personnel (uniformed and non-uniformed) involved in any irregularities to the PNP-IMEG hotlines: SMART -- 0998-970-2286 or GLOBE -- 0995-795-2569.
