PH envoy cites UAE coronavirus response, recoveries

PHILIPPINE AMBASSADOR in Abu Dhabi Hjayceelin Quintana on Tuesday cited United Arab Emirates' efforts in further arresting the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) as well as the continuing increase of recovery rate in the Gulf state.

In a Laging Handa briefing, Quintana said that around 40,000 people in UAE have already recovered from the illness out of over 51,000 confirmed cases.
"I think 40,000 and kanilang recoveries against 51,000 na na-infect, hindi po nagkakalayo 'yong recoveries din po ng ating mga kababayan (I think their recoveries are about 40,000 against the 51,000 infected, the difference on the number of our recovered nationals is not that far," she said.
She said the UAE government continues to implement strict health measures and, at the same time, is aggressive on its mass testing campaign. She noted that UAE has so far tested around 3 million of its 9.6 million population.
"Very serious po sila na magkaroon (ng testing), ang kanilang aim is all residents will be tested. They have 9.6 million population and right now ang kanilang na-test ay 3 million which is already about 31 percent of the entire population so nasasama ang mga expatriates (They are very serious on testing, their aim is to test all residents. They have 9.6 million population and right now they have tested 3 million which is already about 31 percent of the entire population so even the expatriates are included)," she said.
Meanwhile, Quintana did not identify the number of Filipinos diagnosed with Covid-19 as well as those who died and have recovered, noting that official figures from UAE are not broken down into nationalities.
Despite this, she assured that the Embassy continues to monitor and assist all distressed Filipino nationals, particularly those affected by the pandemic.
Based on the latest data from the Department of Foreign Affairs, there are around 6,304 Filipino Covid-19 cases in the entire Middle East/Africa region, 3,810 of whom have recovered while 311 have died. (By Joyce Ann L. Rocamora)
