4 'terror group members' slain, 1 nabbed in SoCot raids

FOUR ALLEGED members of an Islamic State-inspired local terrorist group were killed while another was arrested in simultaneous law enforcement operations over the weekend in Polomolok town, South Cotabato.

Lt. Col. Lino Capellan, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office-12, said the suspects were slain in separate shootouts with joint operatives who were serving at least three warrants of arrest Saturday morning in Purok Maguindanao, Barangay Lumakil in Polomolok.

Capellan said elements from PRO-12’s intelligence and operation units swooped in on the hideout around 6:25 a.m. of targets Solaiman Paraluman and Rod Embang, who were facing murder and attempted murder charges.

“But the two, along with another cohort identified as Ottoh Alangan, resisted, and fired at the approaching operatives,” he said in a report released Monday afternoon.

Capellan said Embang and Paraluman reportedly managed to escape but Alangan, who was armed with a handgun, was fatally wounded in the ensuing firefight and declared dead upon arrival at the Polomolok municipal hospital.

He said another team served an arrest warrant around 6:35 a.m. against suspect Sadan Macabangin, who was facing two counts of murder, but the latter managed to escape after reportedly sensing the presence of police operatives.

But the target’s cohort identified as Muadz Modje engaged the arresting team in a shootout.

Modje sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the process and was also declared dead upon arrival at the municipal hospital. He yielded a .38-caliber revolver with four rounds of ammunition and four sachets of suspected shabu, police said.

Capellan said another encounter ensued during the serving of a warrant of arrest around 7 a.m. at the same site against brothers Ramiden and Ryan Bisaya, who were charged with murder and robbery.

He said the suspects managed to escape but two of their cohorts identified as Noel Castrana and Amer Pagalasan were shot dead by operatives in a firefight at a nearby cornfield.

Recovered from the slain suspects were two homemade firearms and three sachets of suspected shabu.

Another fleeing gunman identified as Daryl Sambial, who was armed with an improvised 12-gauge shotgun, was cornered and arrested near the site.

Capellan said their investigation showed that the slain, arrested and escaped suspects were all members of the Dawlah-Islamiyah under sub-leader Geoffrey Nilong and Abu Omar alias “Moi-Moi”.

“They were involved in a string of armed robberies, carnapping, and gun-for-hire activities in Polomolok and other nearby areas,” he added. (By Richelyn Gubalani)
