AT LEAST 13 personnel of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) have tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) as of Tuesday.
Lt. Wilma Silva, deputy public information officer of NOCPPO, said that of the total cases, four have already recovered while nine others are on their way to recovery.
“Most of them have been assigned in hotels and other accommodation establishments to secure returning overseas Filipinos,” she said.
Silva added that personnel infected with Covid-19 each received cash assistance of PHP10,000, which came from the fundraising project of NOCPPO.
Last month, personnel of NOCPPO began raising funds through their own contribution to assist colleagues who have tested positive for Covid-19.
“We will have a voluntary contribution, seed money, for them,” said Col. Romy Palgue, provincial police director, in an earlier statement.
Police officers who test positive for Covid-19 are required to observe a 14-day quarantine and undergo another test. After they are cleared, they have to rest for seven to 10 more days before reporting back to duty.
Palgue also thanked the local government units in Negros Occidental for their continued support to the Philippine National Police (PNP) by providing food, accommodation, and even allowance to police officers deployed to quarantine facilities.
As of September 13, a total of 5,060 police personnel nationwide have been infected. Of the number, 3,623 have already recovered while 16 have died from the virus. (By Nanette Guadalquiver)
