THE NUMBER of police personnel who have contracted the coronavirus disease has reached 5,233.
As of Wednesday evening, data from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Health Service showed that of the 27 new infections, 16 were from the National Capital Region Police Office, followed by Police Regional Office 8 (Eastern Visayas) with eight while PRO-5 (Bicol), PRO-9 (Zamboanga Peninsula), and PRO-10 (Northern Mindanao) have one each.
Meantime, 3,813 PNP personnel have already recovered from the disease while the death toll stands at 16.
The health service is also monitoring 1,404 total active number of active cases.
Cops tested for Covid-19 observe a 14-day quarantine and undergo another test. Once cleared, they have to rest for seven to 10 more days before going back to duty.
On Monday, PNP chief Gen. Camilo Cascolan led the opening and blessing of the Health Service (HS) Molecular Laboratory -- a new testing center of the PNP for Covid-19 infections.
He said the new HS Molecular Laboratory is hospital-based and as an add-on to PNP's clinical testing services for its personnel and front-liners.
In addition, the PNP is set to receive Covid-19 testing equipment and kits from private donors. These machines will determine antibodies related to virus infections and other diseases.
These kits and equipment will be handed over to the PNP General Hospital which would provide Covid-19 testing for police personnel.
Meanwhile, the Cebu PNP Testing Laboratory will soon get its license to operate from the Department of Health. The PNP Health Service clarified the licensing process of the Cebu-based test hub is in the final stages with a testing capacity of 150 to 180 tests per day. (By Christopher Lloyd Caliwan)
