Census begins in Zambo

THE PHILIPPINE Statistics Authority or PSA has begun its 2020 Census of Population and Housing in Zamboanga City with Mayor Beng Climaco as among the first respondents.

A photo from the Philippine Statistics Authority shows Mayor Beng Climaco answering questions from a census enumerator.

Climaco, also the head of the City Census Coordinating Board, welcomed census enumerators who came to her modest place and she answered questions on the socio-economic as well as household-level and housing characteristics.

She urged residents to support the government’s survey which was originally scheduled in May, but this had been moved to September due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will run until end of this month.

The mayor said respondents and census enumerators must strictly follow health protocols to avoid Covid-19 infection. “Please observe physical distancing and wear a face mask or face shield,” she said.

PSA Chief Statistical Specialist Conrad Sontillano said some 949 people were hired and trained as enumerators. He said the enumerators are equipped with personal protective equipment when they go house-to-house in all 98 barangays here for the census which will take about 15-30 minutes.

The last census in Zamboanga City was conducted in 2015 where it registered a total population of 861,799. Among the barangay which have the highest population were Talon-Talon, Mampang, Tumaga, Tetuan, Calarian, San Roque, Pasonanca, Santa Maria, Baliwasan and Tugbungan.

The census is a nationwide government undertaking that involves the collection, compilation, evaluation, analysis, publication and dissemination of data on population count.

It includes demographic and socio-economic characteristics of population, housing characteristic, household characteristics and barangay characteristics in every barangay, city and municipality, province and region.

It also aims to provide government executives, policy makers, and planners with population and housing data on which to base their social and economic development plans, policies and programs. (Zamboanga Post)
