THE DEPARTMENT of Health commended the local government of Zamboanga for its aggressive anti-polio drive following the successful “Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio 3” campaign here.
DOH Undersecretary Dr. Abdullah Dumama Jr (Field Implementation and Coordination Team for Visayas and Mindanao) sent a letter recently to Mayor Beng Climaco and lauding the efforts of the local government.
“We commend the dedication and hard work of health care staff and community health volunteers, who made sure that every target child was given anti-polio drops,” Dumama said.
He said the highly successful anti-polio campaign amid the “extraordinary time” of the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in the vaccination of 119,421 children aged 0-10 years old.
“The DOH wishes to sustain high coverage of routine immunization in the health centers and hospitals in order to free the children from vaccine-preventable diseases, in particular make the Philippines a polio-free country once again,” Dumama said.
Climaco thanked the City Health Office (CHO) and health workers who took part in the anti-polio drive.
The mayor was actively involved in the campaign and repeatedly called out to parents to have their children immunized against the highly contagious disease.
She led the launching of the Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio 3 program in July and even joined the immunization campaign (for the bivalent oral polio vaccine) in an effort to contain and eradicate polio here.
The anti-polio drive was organized by the DOH in partnership and collaboration with the CHO and the World Health Organization (WHO). The campaign seeks to prevent polio outbreak, a scenario health workers and officials are committed to avoid despite the complications and challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Local health workers underwent a series of orientation on the minimum health standards, as well as infection control protocols amid the coronavirus pandemic prior to the start of the anti-polio program, according to Climaco, who thanked the DOH and WHO for the assistance.
In the previous anti-polio drive in February, the local government vaccinated 221,917 children – more than 8% from its target.
Last September 19, the DOH announced a polio outbreak in the Philippines and launched a synchronized polio vaccination campaign which aims to boost immunization coverage against polio by giving three doses of the oral polio vaccine to all children regardless of their immunization status.
The country has seen a decline of immunization coverage in the past few years, including for protection against polio. In 2018, at least 66% of children completed their oral polio vaccine (drops) doses and 45% received their inactivated polio vaccine (injection) dose. (Zamboanga Post)
