Ilocos Norte Covid-19 patient calls for end to discrimination

A 23-year-old customer care representative from San Lorenzo village, Bangui, Ilocos Norte who recently tested positive for Covid-19 has appealed to the public to show respect and avoid spreading disinformation.

Mark Lester Pilot or IN-C81 is among the first Covid-19 patients in the province who opened up to the public on Wednesday to stop discriminating people as these could kill them more than contracting the virus.

Being isolated in a hospital room for seven days now while undergoing treatment could have been too boring for Pilot but as a vlogger himself, he took the chance to open up himself through his YouTube channel to enlighten everyone about his situation.

A few days before he was confirmed positive for the disease, he narrated that his boarding house in Laoag barred him from entering his dormitory when they learned that he was presumed to have Covid-19.

“The moment I experienced loss of smell and taste, I already had the feeling that I contracted the virus so I went to the hospital for check-up and along the way, I tried to limit my exposure, said Pilot who narrated his struggle moving from one hospital to the other.

He lamented however that even before he was confirmed positive, there were those who tend to aggravate the situation by spreading disinformation.

“What we need is for people to respect our situation and be more patient to us,” Pilot said, referring to some of his co-workers and family members who are being discriminated against and bullied because someone close to them contracted the virus.

“I know I am Covid-19 positive but it doesn’t mean that all of us from the company are all positive. It is not only us who are having difficulty. They were isolated but no one wanted to help them even just for food to sustain them as they cannot go to work. We also need to survive,” he said.

With few more days at the hospital, he looks forward to being reunited with his family and co-workers without feeling any form of discrimination but just an act of kindness and let healing reign in one’s heart. ( By Leilanie Adriano)
