Officials said sailors tried to revive the 55-year old boat master, Enricky Brocka, after he was pulled out unconscious from the trawler and rushed to hospital.
“NAVSOU6 (Naval Special Operations Unit 6) personnel conducted cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the unconscious boat master. The boat master was still unconscious when Camp Navarro General Hospital ambulance arrived and immediately brought the unconscious to Zamboanga City Medical Center. Upon arrival and assessment thereat, the boat master was declared dead on arrival,” the Naval Forces Western Mindanao said.
The survivors - Erickson Broca, 19; Richard Brocka, 30; Oroy Gay, 27; and George Alvarasen, 36, were brought to the naval headquarters where they had been given food and clothes.
The fishermen, all from Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur province, said they went out fishing on August 22 in Zamboanga del Norte’s Siocon town and decided to proceed to Zamboanga City to buy ice for their catch, but huge waves and strong winds battered their trawler and eventually capsized.
They were rescued late Monday afternoon by a patrolling naval attack boat (BA492) under Lt. Vincent Larida who coordinated with NAVSOU6 divers.
Rear Adm. Erick Kagaoan, commander of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao, lauded the personnel of the BA492 and NAVSOU6 for rescuing the fishermen. “The prompt assistance rendered by BA492 and NAVSOU6 personnel showed their competence and utmost dedication to duty in the conduct of rescue and assistance,” he said.
Kagaoan said the navy also recovered the capsized trawler and towed the boat to the naval headquarters. (Zamboanga Post)
