The Tausug calls these as Lansuk-lansuk or candle. However, they believed that this phenomenon is a bad omen or “hara mala”.

Hadja Naning an elder Tausug said that lansuk-lansuk is a “hara mala”, which means that something tragic will happen. According to her, it is believed to bring bad luck. She said that it might be fire, sickness or war.

She said that they are not afraid of it, however she also recalled the time this appeared and war in the mountainous areas in Basilan happened.

Meanwhile, Isabela City Councilor Candu Muarip said that this appeared at this time as a reminder for the people.

“It will not happen without a meaning, and the meaning is not to anyone but for everyone. Meaning, we must be cautious about what is happening today,” he said.

He added that this is also in consideration with our present situation today as we are facing challenges brought about by COVID-19 pandemic.

“Everyone should teach himself how to behave and how to remember God,” he stressed.

According to Wikipedia, a Light Pillar is an atmospheric phenomenon in which a vertical beam of light appears to extend above and or below a light source. The effect is created by the reflection of light from tiny ice crystals that are suspended in the atmosphere or that comprise high clouds. If the light comes from the Sun, the phenomenon is called a sun pillar or solar pillar. Light pillars can also be caused by the Moon or terrestrial sources such as streetlights.(By Nilda T.
