ZAMBOANGA CITY – Security forces arrested 7 people who were engaged in blast fishing off Sibutu Island in the southern Tawi-Tawi province, officials said Monday.
Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, chief of the Western Mindanao Command, said the weekend operation was participated by the Marines, Air Force and the Coast Guard after the military received reports from Sibutu Mayor Alsheefa Pajiji that fishermen were using dynamites in their illegal fishing activities off the remote island.
“The
operation resulted in the apprehension of seven fishermen and the confiscation
of several illegal fishing paraphernalia,” Vinluan said, adding, all those
arrested are residents of the neighboring island of Sitangkai.
He said the fishermen’s speed boat were also seized, including explosives. (Mindanao Examiner)
