ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police captured a suspected Abu Sayyaf militant linked to the kidnapping of a Filipino farmer in Zamboanga del Norte province in southern Philippines, officials said Wednesday.
Officials said Anerson Tungayao was
captured in the coastal village of Arena Blanco late Tuesday afternoon, but an
Abu Sayyaf sub-leader, Injam Yadah, managed to escape.
Members of the Anti-Kidnapping Group also
seized an automatic rifle from Tungayao.
Police and military
implicated Yadah’s group to the September 16 kidnapping of Rex Triplitt in a village in the
outskirts of Sirawai town. Five men, armed with rifles and handguns and all
clad in camouflage uniform, abducted the farmer who was then with his wife and
son, but both managed to run away and sought help from authorities.
It was unknown whether the Abu Sayyaf is targeting local traders, but Tungayao
is currently under interrogation by the police.
Security forces recovered Triplitt on September 30 following a firefight with his guards in the village of Pisa Itom in Sirawai town. Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio, commander of the 1st Infantry Division and head of the anti-terror Joint Task Force ZamPeLan, said Triplitt managed to escape during the fighting and sought help from villagers.
