THE NEGROS Occidental provincial government is set to donate financial assistance of PHP1 million each to the four provinces in Luzon devastated by typhoons Rolly and Ulysses.
The recipients are Albay and Catanduanes in Bicol Region (Region 5) and Cagayan and Isabela in Cagayan Valley (Region 2).
Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said in times of need, Negros Occidental should be able to assist and support other local government units.
The amount was approved by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) during the meeting presided by Lacson held at the Capitol Social Hall in Bacolod City on Tuesday afternoon. It will be sourced from the province’s existing PDRRM Fund.
In August last year, the provincial government also extended cash assistance worth PHP1 million to Batanes after the town of Itbayat was struck by major earthquakes.
On Tuesday night, President Rodrigo Duterte placed the entire Luzon under a state of calamity after the series of typhoons that hit the country’s largest island.
This came after the National DRRMC approved a resolution recommending Duterte to put Luzon under a state of calamity due to the damage brought by super typhoon Rolly and typhoons Quinta and Ulysses.
A declaration of a state of calamity hastens rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts of the government and the private sector, including any international humanitarian assistance. (By Nanette Guadalquiver)
