CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Special Forces killed a Filipino leftist lawmaker’s daughter in fierce clashes in the town of Marihatag in Surigao del Sur province on Mindanao region, officials announced Sunday.
Officials said the weekend fighting broke out in the village called San Isidro where members of the 3rd Special Forces Battalion battled with over two dozen communist rebels and killing the 22-year old Jevilyn Campos Cullamat, whose mother is Congresswoman Eufemia Campos Cullamat.
The lawmaker belongs to the Bayan Muna partylist group which is
being linked by Philippine authorities to the Communist Party of the
Philippines and its armed wing the New People’s Army where her daughter was a
member.
Officials said the slain rebel was under the Sandatahang Yunit
Pampropaganda – Guerrilla Front 19 of the Northeastern
Regional Committee. The fighting last about 45 minutes and there was no
report of military casualties.
Soldiers also recovered assorted automatic rifles from the
battle scene, including the body of Cullamat and her weapon. The lawmaker
confirmed the killing of her daughter, but showed no remorse.
The NPA has been fighting for many decades now trying to
overthrow the democratic government and establish its communist state.
