RESIDENTS IN areas near waterways and mountain slopes in Region 4-A (Calabarzon) must brace for flooding and landslides, the weather bureau said Thursday.
In an interview, Aileen Abelardo, a hydrologist from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), said this is due to rains from a low pressure area (LPA) and thunderstorms.
"Even if the LPA will no longer directly affect Region IV-A, however, thunderstorms with rain that can cause flooding and landslides are still possible in the coming days," she said.
Thunderstorms are common in Calabarzon at this time of the year, she noted.
The LPA was located 35 kilometers south-southwest of Alabat, Quezon as of 3 a.m. Thursday.
It would bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Calabarzon, Metro Manila, Central Luzon and the provinces of Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela and Pangasinan, PAGASA said.
Some of those thunderstorms may bring moderate to heavy rains, PAGASA weather forecaster Benison Estareja said.
He, however, said there is a low chance for the LPA to intensify into a tropical cyclone.
The LPA may be over the West Philippine Sea by Thursday afternoon, he said.
Meanwhile, Abelardo is not ruling out the possibility that the soil in Calabarzon may be saturated due to previous rainfall.
Saturated soil can easily dislodge if there is rain from the LPA and thunderstorms - resulting in landslides there, she noted.
She said the expected rain can also raise the water level in waterways across the region which may overflow and spill into areas along these channels and cause flooding.
PAGASA said Quezon waterways likely to be particularly affected are Upper Umiray, Lower Bolbok (Lawaya), Malaking-Ilog, Iyam, Macalelon, Catanauan, Silongin Lagda, Pagsanjan, Yabahaan, Bigol, Guinhalinan, Vinas, Calauag, Pandanan, Sta. Lucia, Lugan Malaybalay, Maapon, Bucal (Lalangan), Lakayat, Tignoan, Agos, Anibawan (Polilio Island), and Upper Kilbay-Catabangan.
Other waterways in Calabarzon likely to be affected also include Rizal province's Upper Marikina and Kaliwa; Cavite province's Laboc (Balsahan), Cañas, Ylang-ylang, and Imus; Laguna province's Pagsanjan, Pila-Sta. Cruz, San Juan, and San Cristobal as well as Batangas' Lian, Banabang-Molino, Pansipit, Kapumpong, Rosario-Lobo and Upper Bolbok (Lawaya). (By Catherine Teves)
