THE PANGASINAN Police Provincial Office (PPPO) is planning to deploy narcotic detection dogs in 19 border control points of the province to intensify its anti-drug campaign.
In an interview on Wednesday, PPPO director Col. Redrico Maranan said the measure is part of the strategies submitted to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and to Governor Amado Espino III for next year.
“It is part of the strategies we believe necessary in order to monitor all vehicles entering the province. It would aid against the entry of illegal drugs in Pangasinan,” he said.
He underscored the province’s reliance on direct actions against illegal drugs, such as arrests, jailing, and confiscation but lacks in the preventive aspect that needs considerable improvement.
Maranan said only visual search is being done in checkpoints and the assistance of drug-sniffing dogs can help authorities to further check suspicious cargo on vehicles.
The PPPO hopes the SB and the office of the governor would approve the procurement of two to four drug-sniffing dogs by the first quarter of 2021, he said.
Maranan said the properly-trained dogs could cost up to almost half a million pesos.
Once procured, the dogs will first be deployed along identified drug routes to assist in the combat against illegal drugs, he added. (By Ahikam Pasion)
