ZAMBOANGA MAYOR Beng Climaco ordered security forces to strictly enforce the ban on firecrackers as she reminded residents of a local law prohibiting the manufacture, sale and use of firecrackers.
Climaco said City Ordinance 431 took effect seven years ago following deadly attacks by Moro National Liberation Front members under Nur Misuari. “The continuous ban on firecrackers not only because it forms part of the health measures, but also of the people’s trauma from the siege seven years ago. The fear and the pain remains until today,” she said.
She said security forces are tasked to fully enforce the provisions of the ordinance.
The Department of Health also
appealed to the public for a firecracker-free celebration during the New Year
to reduce the risks of injuries, as well as prevent mass gatherings as part of
health measures against the spread of the Covid-19. (Zamboanga Post)
