Police drug stings net 2 men in Zambo

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police seized nearly P3 million worth of Methamphetamine HCL or shabu from two separate operations here, officials reported Saturday.

A police photo released to the Zamboanga Post shows the
Methamphetamine HCL seized from Nurhan Ismula during a drug sting in Zamboanga City's Arena Blanco village.

Officials identified the two drug suspects as Nurhan Ismula and Nurbaser Sakandal, both 32 years old.

Ismula was arrested on Friday night in the village of Arena Blanco. He yielded some P1.1 million worth of illegal drugs while Sakandal had P1.8 million worth of shabu when he was arrested late Thursday.

Brig. Gen. Ronaldo Ylagan, the regional police chief, said Ismula is included in the list of notorious drug pushers operating here. He tagged Ismula as a “high value target.” He said Ismula was arrested in a drug sting headed by Maj. Salvador Galvez.

Ylagan said Sakandal was also arrested in an undercover sting operation headed by Maj. Chester Natividad. Some P1.8 million worth of illegal drugs were seized from Sakandal in Tetuan village.

“We commend the relentless efforts of the Drug Enforcement Group of the Philippine National Police and other police units for the notable accomplishment in the fight against illegal drugs in the region,” he said.

Just this week, police disarmed Maj. Jivertson Pelovello, the anti-narcotics chief of the Zamboanga City Police Office, after he tested positive for alleged illegal drug use, according to Ylagan.

He said Pelovello has been transferred to the Police Regional Personnel Holding and Accounting Section and is undergoing pre-charge investigation and summary dismissal proceedings.

“Pelovello has been disarmed of his issued firearms and slapped with corresponding administrative charges,” Ylagan said in his report to National Police Chief, Gen. Debold Sinas who ordered the regional police to immediately take Pelovello in restrictive custody.

Sinas vowed to spare no one in the on-going anti-narcotics program to purge the police ranks of drug users. “Anybody who will test positive for drug use does not deserve to stay in the service any minute longer,” he said.

Pelovello was among 60 members of the Zamboanga City Police Office, including 12 of his personnel who were tested for illegal drug use by the Regional Crime Laboratory Office on December 18. He was initially screened, but the subsequent confirmatory test on January 6 yielded positive result for drug use.

There was no immediate statement from Pelovello. In July last year, a video clip (https://www.facebook.com/newpostph/videos/223487068812451/) which went viral on Facebook allegedly showed Pelovello pinning to the ground a hapless civilian following a traffic altercation in Pasonanca village. In the clip, Pelovello was seen stepping on the man’s chest and later dragged him on the pavement as he called for police back up. (Zamboanga Post)
