Strong quake rattles Mindanao

KIDAPAWAN CITY – A strong earthquake late Thursday hit the southern Philippines, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to buildings or structures.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the 7.1 magnitude quake occurred at around 8.23 p.m. in Jose Abad Santos town (Davao Occidental) in Eastern Mindanao.

It said the tremor was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 116 kilometers.

It was also felt in General Santos City, Intensity IV; Intensity IV - Davao City; Intensity II – Bislig City in Surigao del Sur; Intensity V – Kiamba town in Sarangani; Intensity IV - General Santos City; Alabel in Sarangani; Koronadal City in South Cotabato and Intensity III in Kidapawan City and also in Bislig town in Surigao del Sur; in Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental.

And Intensity II in Cagayan de Oro City, Surigao City in Surigao del Norte; also in Borongan in Eastern Samar and Intensity I in Catbalogan City. The earthquake was also felt in Zamboanga City in Western Mindanao.

Intensity is the severity of earthquake shaking and assessed using a descriptive scale – the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. And magnitude is the quantitative measure of the size of the earthquake at its source.

The Philippines sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometer area where large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. It has more than 400 volcanoes and sometimes called the circum-Pacific seismic belt. (Rhoderick BeƱez)
