PAGADIAN CITY - Motorcycle gunmen shot dead a town vice mayor and a municipal engineer in a daring attack at a crowded area during a health program Saturday in Zamboanga Sibugay province in the restive southern region of Mindanao.

Vice Mayor Restituto Calonge and Engineer Edgar Pampanga, of Mabuhay town, were fatally shot by the attackers at the municipal ground. The killers escaped after the shooting.
A photograph of the Calonge posted
on social media showed the bloodied politician slumped on the table and surrounded
by people.
The picture was taken by Grace
Mahilum and posted on her Facebook page along with these words “Vice ngano man
kaistorya pata ganina.” (Vice, why? We were just talking a while ago.)
No other details were made available
by the police or the owner of the photo. And no individual or group claimed
responsibility for the killings. Police are investigating the motives of the
murder. Calonge’s family did not release any statement to the press.
The killings occurred ahead of the
October registration of politicians who are running for next year’s local and
national polls. It was not immediately known whether the killings were politically
motivated or not, if there were security details in the area.
Elections are traditionally bloody
