SULU - The Philippine Navy rescued three fishermen in the Celebes Sea between the provinces of Basilan and Sulu after the hull of their outrigger broke while transporting catch to Zamboanga City, officials said Tuesday.

Navy Public Affairs Officer Lt. Chester Ross Cabaltera said the trio Arshid Janier, 26; Ardimal Alipudin, 32; and Aljimil Diman, 41, were rescued Monday by members of the Naval Task Group Sulu. “They were brought to hospital in Luuk town in Sulu province and examined by doctors,” he said.
Cabaltera said Karfaiza Omar, the village chieftain of Tulayan in Luuk, radioed the Naval Forces Western Mindanao for help after receiving a distress call from the fishermen. He said the navy immediately deployed its multi-purpose attack craft BA492 and patrol craft BRP Alberto Navarette to search for the fishermen.
He said half of the boat was already
under water when rescuers arrived and quickly transferred them to the navy
vessel. “The heroic feat demonstrated the outstanding zeal of concerned
citizens coupled with the gallantry of our sailors and marines who are always
ready to respond to maritime disasters, anytime and anywhere,” Cabaltera said.
