Ordinance sought to penalize telecom, cable TV firms

LOCAL RESIDENTS are asking members of the Zamboanga City Council to introduce an ordinance that will penalize telecommunication firms and cable television operators who fail to properly maintain their cable lines.

They say the cables have been left hanging by the poles and often times snagged by passing trucks causing them to break and pose serious safety concerns in the different barangays.

“Cosa ya gayot estos maga cable wires dol maga sablayan ya. Nohay quien ta mira na law del maga telecom y cable (television) operators. Delicao este na camino. Debe el maga consejales hace ley contra con este problema desde antes hasta ahora,” said Pedrito dela Cruz, who cited the cable lines along Veterans Avenue.

Mayor Beng Climaco has ordered the General Services Office and the City Engineer’s Office through the “Task Force Alambre” to continue dismantling unserviceable wires and cables that pose threats to safety aside from being an eye sore in streets.

There were no immediate statements from executives of telecommunication firms PLDT and Smart Communications, and Globe Telecom; and cable television operators Sky Cable and Mindanao Cable TV who are being blamed for all the problems posed by dangling cable lines and their poor maintenance services.
