Illegal settlers on protected lands arrested

THE NATIONAL  Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Monday announced the arrest of six individuals for illegally occupying and constructing structures on protected lands in Barangay San Rafael, Rodriguez, Rizal.

Director Eric Distor, NBI Officer-In-Charge, said they conducted operations on April 22 and nabbed Angelica Sanchez, Rose Marie Solomon, Daniel Solana, Romeo Enriquez, Maria Clarisa Camanguan, and Emmanuel Dela Cruz.

The operation arose from a letter-request by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office in Rizal that certain individuals were illegally occupying and already constructed permanent structures on the protected landscape in Sitio Wawa, Barangay San Rafael.

Distor directed the NBI-Environmental Crime Division to conduct the investigation.

The suspects, subjected to inquest proceedings before the Department of Justice the day after their arrest, violated the National Integrated Protected Areas System Act and Revised Forestry Code. (By Benjamin Pulta)
