DFA welcomes UN support for Asean’s ‘positive’ role in Myanmar

THE DEPARTMENT (UNSC) strong support for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) “positive and constructive role” in helping to peacefully solve issues in Myanmar.

In a statement, the DFA reiterated the UNSC’s call for the release of “all those arbitrarily detained, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint.”

“The Department also expresses its support for the work of Ms. Christine Schraner Burgener, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar,” the DFA said.

This after the UNSC was briefed by Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof of Brunei Darussalam, as chair of Asean, on the outcomes of the recent Asean Leaders’ Meeting on Myanmar on April 30.

“The Members of the Council welcomed the convening of the Asean Leaders’ Meeting on 24 April 2021 in Indonesia, as well as the Chairman’s Statement and the ‘Five-Point Consensus,’” the DFA said.

It said Burgener also briefed the UNSC, with its members offering “full support” for her ongoing visit to the region.

“They encouraged complementarity of her work to the work of ASEAN, and hoped she would visit Myanmar as soon as possible,” the DFA said.

On Friday, the UNSC called for an immediate end to violence in Myanmar as stated in an Asean plan.

The plan also called for the naming of an envoy from the Asean to address the ongoing crisis caused by the military coup in Myanmar in February. (By Raymond Carl Dela Cruz)
