Police vow to work hard to maintain peace

CEBU CITY – The local police force said it will strive harder to maintain the low crime volume here and protect the welfare of the Cebuanos.

Lt. Col. Wilbert Parilla, the Deputy Chief for Operations, said sustaining the gains of the police amid the Covid-19 pandemic remains a big challenge.

“There was really a decrease in crime volume. Considering that Cebu City has a little over a million in population, including visitors, and yet our stations recorded only an average of 15 incidents per week,” Parilla said, adding that there were instances wherein a police station recorded no single incident in a day.

He also noted lower criminal incidents during the enforcement of the liquor ban since February this year which was lifted recently by Mayor Edgardo Labella after signing an executive order.

Establishments serving liquor while offering live entertainment should secure a permit from the Emergency Operations Center in order to ensure that minimum health standards such as wearing of face masks and physical distancing would be imposed.

Labella’s order also prohibits serving of liquor during curfew hours from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Parilla said the police and the Business Permit and Licensing Office, City Environmental and Sanitation Environmental Enforcement Team and Prevention, Restoration, Beautification, and Enhancement personnel will conduct inspection of establishments serving liquor. He said establishments and customers violating the regulations will be meted with appropriate sanctions under the existing ordinances. (John Rey Saavedra)
