Security forces kill 3 in Tawi-Tawi clash

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Security forces killed 2 notorious drug traffickers and a woman in a gun battle Sunday in the southern Muslim province of Tawi-Tawi, police said.

Police said Girang Lipae and his son Basil and the still unidentified female fighter clashed with police commandos and soldiers in the gang’s hideout in the coastal village of Sipangkot in Sitangkai town.

The police were trying to serve arrest warrants for both men, wanted for a string murder charges and drug trafficking, when they came under fire from the gang’s hideout, sparking a firefight that killed all 3 suspects.

There were no reports of police or military casualties in the fighting.

National Police Chief, General Guillermo Eleazar, lauded all those involved in the “intensified intelligence-driven operation,” saying the 2 slain men were notorious and wanted by authorities for their crimes. He said security forces recovered two rifles and a pistol, including ammunition, from the gang’s hideout.

“Further investigation reveals that the subject personalities were notorious in the province and involved in facilitating the entry of illegal drugs from Sabah in Malaysia to Tawi-Tawi. There were reports that subject persons also threatened and forcibly grabbed the houses and harvested seaweeds and other marine goods of their neighbors,” Eleazar said, citing police reports.

“As a new chapter of leadership unfolds in the PNP, I will make sure that we will further intensify our campaign against all wanted persons across the country even if they hide in the smallest and far-flung area, we will hunt them down and put them behind bars,” he added.

Eleazar, one of the most respected generals in the police force, replaced General Debold Sinas who retired Friday. Both Eleazar and Sinas belong to Class 1987 of the Philippine Military Academy. (Mindanao Examiner)
