BASILAN – A lone gunman shot dead a village chieftain of Basilan’s Sumisip town in a daring broad daylight attack Monday outside a fast food restaurant in downtown Isabela City.
Jamiron Ajijon, chairman of the village called Marang, was shot several times in the head. The motive of the attack is still unknown, but the murder occurred ahead of the local and national elections next year.
A community Facebook page Ronda del Basilan also showed family members weeping over the bloodied body of Ajijon as policemen and kibitzers looked on unmindful of the health protocols due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Police did not issue any statement and the dead man’s family was silent over the killing, grieving over the murder of the politician which occurred during the holy month of Ramadan.
Gun attacks are not uncommon in Basilan, especially in Isabela City. The province is part of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. (Mindanao Examiner)
