Eleazar gets 1st jab as PNP rolls out vaccination

PHILIPPINE NATONAL  Police (PNP) chief, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar on Tuesday took the first coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine for the police force's A4 priority group.

In a ceremony in Camp Crame, Eleazar received his first dose of China's Sinovac vaccine administered by Health Assistant Secretary Maria Francia Laxamana.

Bilang ama ng PNP, gusto kong ipakita sa ating hanay na epektibo po ang bakuna laban sa Covid-19. Lahat po ng bakunang aprubado ng Food and Drug Administration ay ligtas kaya’t huwag po kayong matakot na magpaturok nito (As the father of the PNP, I want to show to our men that the best vaccines are those available. All of them are safe and effective because they were all approved by the Food and Drug Administration),” Eleazar said.

Other members of the PNP Command Group who also received the jabs were deputy chief for administration, Lt. Gen. Joselito Veracruz, and deputy chief for operations, Lt. Gen. Israel Ephraim Dickson.

We will be able to do our job better as front-liners if we are vaccinated. We need to protect our health from the coronavirus so that we can fulfill our mandate to enforce the law and protect the public),” he added.

He said the vaccination of the top officials of the PNP just now proves that it follows the rules on vaccination priority.

Based on the rules, A1 (medical front-liners) should be the first to be vaccinated, followed by A2 (senior citizens) and A3 (persons with comorbidities). A4 category includes essential front-liners and indigent Filipinos.

Eleazar said this would also help boost vaccine confidence among police personnel which is now at 92.76 percent.

Around 500 doses were allotted to the PNP for Tuesday's A4 vaccination rollout.

“(Some) 200 of this will be administered in Camp Crame for the senior officers, another 200 will be for the whole of NCRPO (National Capital Region Police Office) and 50 for SAF (Special Action Force) and another 50 for Avsegroup (Aviation Security Group) for a total of 500,” said Eleazar.

He said more doses will be supplied to the police force as more vaccine supplies are expected to arrive in the country in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Eleazar urged police officers to avail of whatever vaccine brand is available.

Huwag na po tayong mamili. Ang tanging piliin lang natin ay ang maging protekado (Let's not choose anymore. Let's just choose to be protected). The best vaccines are the ones that are already available to us. Let us all contribute to attaining herd immunity for everyone’s safety,” he said.

Since the PNP started the vaccination on March 1, more than 18,000 policemen were vaccinated -- all of them under the A1 to A3 categories. (Christopher Lloyd Caliwan)
