PNP coronavirus death toll rises to 71

A POLICE officer from Davao Oriental is the Philippine National Police's (PNP) latest fatality from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), raising its death toll to 71.

In a statement on Monday, PNP chief, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, said the patient, a 47-year-old police staff master sergeant assigned at Lupon Municipal Police Station in Davao Oriental, died on Saturday.

He added that the PNP continues to provide assistance to cops who contract Covid-19 and their families.

As of Monday, the PNP Health Service logged 164 new cases, bringing the total number of active cases to 1,865.

Another 89 police officers have recovered, pushing the recovery count to 23,930 out of a total of 25,866 infections since the start of the health crisis last year.

As this developed, Eleazar reminded police commanders to closely supervise their respective areas of responsibility to help curb a surge in Covid-19 cases.

The PNP will roll out its vaccination for police officers under the A4 priority group (economic front-liners and uniformed personnel) in Camp Crame on Tuesday.

Eleazar said he will be joined by the members of the PNP Command Group in receiving the first dose to boost vaccine confidence among police officers.

Citing latest data, he said around 92.23 percent of police personnel are now willing to be vaccinated against Covid-19. (Christopher Lloyd Caliwan)
