Police, AFP defend LGU’s support

ZAMBOANGA CITY Police Chief, Col. Rexmel Reyes has defended the proposed purchase by the local government of necessary police equipment intended for peace and security after political foes of Mayor Beng Climaco questioned the inclusion of this in the supplemental budget approved by the City Council.

Reyes said the list of items and equipment and their specifications included in the supplemental budget was prepared and submitted by the local police office.

“The City Government is consistent in its commitment to support the police through the provision of equipment and other requirements of the PNP in its day-to-day operations with the ultimate goal to better improve and enhance operational capability in dealing with our peace and order situation,” Reyes said.

Reyes agreed with the local government that the police have to be equipped with the necessary assets and mobility to quickly respond to any threat situation.

He said the Zamboanga City Police Office has activated the 2nd Manuever Company as Seaborne Company at the R.T. Lim Boulevard with the main function of guarding the coastal areas and preventing intrusion by terrorists and other criminal elements.

“The activation of the 2nd Manuever Company complemented with the needed personnel, requires additional equipment for augmentation and to be more responsible to police work,” Reyes said.

The military’s Joint Task Force Zamboanga, which is also a beneficiary of Mayor Beng Climaco’s strong commitment and support to the security forces, defended the local government.

Climaco has previously donated patrol vehicles, among others to the police and military as part of her priority programs in Security, Health and Education. (Zamboanga Post, Jasmine Mohammadsali)
