DOJ report on illegal drug ops out soon

THE DEPARTMENT  of Justice (DOJ) has completed its report on the initial 52 cases of law enforcement officers implicated in charges arising from alleged lapses during illegal drug operations.

“I’m just going over it,” Guevarra texted reporters on Monday, adding he will discuss with the Philippine National Police (PNP) on how to disclose details to the public.

“If a criminal investigation is warranted, witnesses including family members will be sought and called upon to provide information,” he said.

As of June, Guevarra said there were 81 criminal cases involving deaths that are pending before the courts or undergoing preliminary investigation before the DOJ.

Last month, PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said the DOJ is free to re-investigate cases of cops in the anti-illegal drug war even if they have been cleared of administrative cases.

He said the PNP will fully cooperate with the DOJ.

The PNP and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency have turned over to the agency the case folders of about 200 anti-illegal drug operations where deaths occurred.

During the pre-State of the Nation Address Forum of the Security, Peace, and Justice Cluster also in July, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said since 2017, a total of 17,142 rogue cops have been subjected to disciplinary actions and sanctions.

The total includes 906 police officers who were dismissed from the service. ( Benjamin Pulta)
