ZAMBOANGA CITY – The provincial police chief of Sulu was killed Friday afternoon after a cop he allegedly reprimanded at a checkpoint shot him in the capital town of Jolo. The attacker was eventually shot dead by responding policemen.
Colonel Michael Bawayan was inspecting the checkpoint when the shooting occurred. His attacker, Staff Sergeant Imran Jimlani, 43, was also killed on the spot.
There was no immediate statement from the municipal or provincial police headquarters about the shooting. But photos of the slain police official posted on social media quickly went viral.
It was unclear what triggered Jimlani to attack his 49-year old superior. The killing on Bawayan came barely three weeks after National Police Chief General Guillermo Eleazar inspected police forces in Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region. (Mindanao Examiner)
