Dabawenyos urged to be vigilant amid terror threat

THE CITY  government here on Thursday urged Dabawenyos to always be vigilant for their safety when in public places.

This, after the Japanese Embassy in Manila confirmed Tuesday that Tokyo received an intelligence report about a possible terror attack in six countries, including the Philippines.

“Various religious groups in the city are being asked to strengthen their security measures so that they are not overrun by terrorists. To their followers, it is also important to be alert on suspicious individuals who wear jackets, carry backpacks, and other items that may contain bombs,” a post by the city government on its official Facebook account said.

It urged residents to be vigilant when going to the markets, vaccination sites, hospitals, churches, and other religious gathering venues.

“When going to these areas, do not carry a backpack or wear jackets. Everyone's cooperation is encouraged so that Davao City does not experience terrorism again like what happened on September 2, 2016 [Roxas Night Market bombing],” it added.

The bombing incident left 17 people dead and 74 others wounded.

Meanwhile, Col. Kirby John Kraft, Davao City Police Office director, assured Dabawenyos that they are on guard to prevent similar terrorist attacks in the city.

In a virtual press briefing on Wednesday, he said they would continue their intensified intelligence-gathering measures and intensify the checkpoints in various strategic areas in coordination with Task Force Davao. ( Che Palicte)
