PHILIPPINE NATIONAL Police (PNP) chief, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, on Thursday assured the Chinese community in the country of continuous police assistance amid a reported increase in kidnapping incidents.
Eleazar said since 2017, the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group and other police units have been keeping an eye on kidnapping cases perpetrated by Chinese nationals and their Filipino cohorts, especially against Chinese workers in the country.
“We assure the Chinese Embassy officials that the PNP is continuously monitoring and stepping up its operation to protect their citizens in the country as manifested by the series of successful operations against KFR (kidnap for ransom) groups since 2017,” Eleazar said in a statement.
He added that regardless of the nationality of both the victims and the perpetrators, an attack committed in the Philippines is "an attack on our sovereignty".
He said this is why the PNP is continuing to conduct regular security assessments and adjustments to maintain peace and order.
On Tuesday, the Philippines and China vowed to deepen mutual trust and cooperation to crack down on transnational crimes, including cross-border gambling, cybercrime fraud, and kidnapping.
