NDRRMC to hold school-based disaster management webinar

THE NATIONAL Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) will conduct a "school-based disaster risk reduction and management" webinar on Friday, in line with the third quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) scheduled on September 9.

NDRRMC deputy spokesperson Mark Cashean Timbal, in a message to the Philippine News Agency (PNA) Thursday, said the webinar will focus on the function and responsibilities of school authorities in the "conduct of drills and preparations for emergencies" that may affect the schools.

This is to ensure that school authorities are on "equal footing" in their roles in case of emergencies such as earthquakes.

"We will focus on what the school admin(administration) should do to prepare for emergencies that will affect their academic communities," Timbal said.

As of Thursday morning, the NDRRMC deputy spokesperson said they already have over 500 participants coming from the various Department of Education (DepEd) divisions.

"Pero expected na tumaas pa ( the number of participants is expected to increase) today since DepEd has encouraged participation. This seminar was organized with the help of the DepEd DRRM Service," Timbal said.

The ceremonial pressing of the button for the third quarter NSED will be held at 9 a.m. on September 9, with the program starting at 8 a.m.

The event can be watched via live streaming at the Civil Defense PH and NDRRMC Facebook pages where viewers can do the "duck, cover, and hold" gesture in their houses and offices once the ceremonial alarm sounds.

Evacuation drills and the conduct of simulation scenarios are still suspended to prevent possible exposure to Covid-19. Information materials on the NSED and announcements on earthquake preparedness will also be released on the social media pages of the Office of Civil Defense and NDRRMC.

The NSED for the first and second quarter of this year were held on March 11 and June 10, respectively.

This is the country's fifth online NSED following the conduct of two online drills in the third and fourth quarter of 2020. (Priam Nepomuceno)
