Landslide injures 2, nearly buries 6 vehicles in Zambo town

PAGADIAN CITY – Two persons were injured when heavy rains triggered a landslide that nearly buried six vehicles in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur, police said on Thursday.

Major Shellamie Chang, a regional police spokeswoman, said the landslide occurred around 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday in the village of Gatub in Lakewood town where a road project is going on. “Two drivers sustained physical injuries and were immediately rushed to hospital in the neighboring town of Tigbao,” Chang said.

“The Pyramid Construction company managed by Engineer Nor Dacula was conducting (a) road widening operation when a heavy rainfall occurred which was believed to be the cause of the incident. Six vehicles which were traversing the road were hit by dumps of soil coming from the hilly portion of the road,” she added.

She identified the drivers of the vehicles as Michael Pusaca, 44, and a resident of Cotabato City; Mohammad Mamadra, 41, of Maguindanao’s Parang town; Sherhan Sabbarani, 34, a resident Zamboanga City; Boy Diangca, 40, of Buug town in Zamboanga Sibugay province; Sherhan Sabbarani, 34, also of Zamboanga City, and one unidentified man.

Chang did not name those who were rushed to the hospital and their condition. A series of landslides frequently hit the 270-kilometer stretch of highway from Zamboanga City to Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur, especially during the rainy season. (Mindanao Examiner)
