Military ordnance kills Zambo boy: Police

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police said an explosion that killed a boy near the naval station here was from a military ordnance.

Maj. Shellamie Chang, a regional police spokesperson, said two other minors were also wounded in the Monday blast in Rio Hondo village. She said one of the boys found the ordnance inside a bucket surrounded by a pile of used tires in a sandbox outside the military base and threw it against the concrete wall where it exploded.

“Investigation revealed that prior to the incident, there were five minors in which three of them gained entry (at vicinity of the naval base) passing through a seawall and entered under the watch tower wherein the military ordnance was located.”

“Accordingly, one of the minors saw the military ordnance in a green pail inside a pile of used tires surrounded by a sandbox and with a yellow line marked with caution. Thereafter, they brought the ordnance at the shoreline and one of the minors threw the ordnance against the seawall which caused it to explode and resulted in the instantaneous death of one of the minors,” Chang said, adding the police were investigating the incident.

The Philippine Navy did not issue any statement or claimed ownership of the ordnance. (Mindanao Examiner)
