3-member DOJ panel to probe couple's death in March 2021 raid

A THREE-member panel has been assigned to do a preliminary investigation in the case involving the death of couple Ariel and Ana Mariz Lemita-Evangelista in a police operation in Batangas in March last year.

Prosecutor Honey Delgado, a spokesperson for the Office of the Prosecutor General, said an order designating a panel of three prosecutors to handle the case was issued Tuesday.

“For security reasons, let us not mention the names of our prosecutors,” Delgado said.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) earlier completed its investigation in the case of the Evangelista couple, who are members of the Ugnayan ng Mamamayan Laban sa Pagwawasak ng Kalikasan at Kalupaan (Umalpas Ka).

The two died inside their hut near a beach in Barangay Calayo, Nasugbu, Batangas.

The DOJ earlier said it is evaluating the cases arising from the deaths which occurred on March 7, 2021 in different areas in Southern Tagalog, including the incident involving the Evangelista couple.

A special investigating team has also recommended the filing of murder charges against “certain” law enforcers tagged in the killing of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Cavite official Emmanuel Asuncion.

An investigation on the deaths of two Dumagat indigenous leaders Puroy dela Cruz and Randy dela Cruz is still ongoing.

In the case of Asuncion, a search warrant had been issued by Manila Regional Trial Court judge Jose Lorenzo dela Rosa for his home in Rosario, Cavite.

Police said a pursuit operation resulted in the shooting of Asuncion at the Workers’ Assistance Center in DasmariƱas City. (Benjamin Pulta)
