4 civilians shot in Zamboanga

FOUR PEOPLE were shot and wounded after two men engaged each other in a gun duel in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, a police spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Maj. Shellamie Chang said a 12-year old and a 16-year old villagers were among the wounded in the gunfight after being hit by stray bullets in Kasanyangan village late Monday.

The identities of the minors were not made public, but Chang said the duo and the other victims, Al-Aziz Baguinda, 18; and Benkimar Eslim, 26, were rushed to hospital. She said the protagonists escaped after the duel and it was unknown if any of them was wounded in the gun fight.

“The victims were buying street foods along the corner road when two unidentified male persons confronted each other and exchanged gunshots in the area,” Chang said, adding, “both suspects fled on foot heading towards the inner portion of Asinan in Kasanyangan after the commission of the crime.”

Most of the victims, Chang said, suffered bullet wounds in the legs. She said the police were searching for the two gunmen. “ZCPS6 has conducted a manhunt operation for the arrest of the suspects and to determine the motive of the incident,” she said, referring to the police station responsible for securing the area.

Police investigators recovered eight bullet casings fired from a .45-caliber pistol and seven shell casings of a 9mm pistol. The duel occurred despite an election gun ban. (Mindanao Examiner)
