CEBU CITY – Mayor Michael Rama said the local government will be fair in assessing and approving permit applications of political groups planning to hold campaign rallies or partisan events here.
Rama said his office would always ensure that politics
is not a consideration in processing applications for permits for campaign
rallies. The mayor issued the statement after the local government rejected the
application of a group of supporters of presidential aspirant, Vice President
Leni Robredo, to use the Plaza Independencia as a venue for a political event.
He said political rallies are not allowed at the Plaza
Independencia, adding he also turned down a request from the camp of
presidential aspirant Bongbong Marcos Jr. and his running mate Davao City Mayor
Sara Duterte to hold their Cebu grand rally at the Plaza Independencia.
The mayor made the assurance following accusations by
event organizers from Robredo's camp that their application earlier this month
for a permit to use the Plaza Independencia was turned down by the local
government. (John Rey Saavedra)
