OPINION: Sunday Reflection by Mayor Beng Climaco (Zamboanga City)

“I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God’s upward calling, in Christ Jesus.”

MAY THIS verse from Philippians inspire us to pursue our goals and persevere in life toward Jesus our ultimate goal.

The Fifth Sunday of Lent is also the start of the Holy Month of Ramadan. We are similarly called to observe prayer, fasting, and good works, deeds, words, and actions. Our Muslim faithful begins their journey as we intensify our journey toward the Holy Week sacrifice of Jesus' suffering and death.

The Gospel narrates Jesus’ writing on the ground twice, as scribes and Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery to be stoned to death. They tested Jesus on the stoning. Jesus replied: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”

Here we reflect on today's digital world where by a quick press and swipe we are able to throw our “stones of condemnation virtually!” How easy for us to judge, condemn and destroy the reputation of others by posting, creating and reacting to what is available in social media. Being bullied and condemned cause great harm on the victims, their loved ones and the public condemnation gains greater mileage.

Lent is a time to ask God for Mercy and Pardon for the hate we cause by our judgements. May we repent of our acts and follow Jesus toward kindness and Mercy.  “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She replied: “No one, Sir.” Then Jesus said: “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.” (MBC)
