ZAMBOANGA CITY - Gunmen opened fire in the air and snatched election ballots on Monday from a school in Tipo-Tipo town in the southern Basilan province.

The armed men’s accomplices in the school compound fired at soldiers as they retreated. There were no reports of casualties and some of the ballots were recovered by pursuing soldiers.
The local radio station dxNO-Radyo Komunidad also reported the incident: “In Tipo-Tipo, an undetermined number of armed men have reportedly fired their guns at unknown directions, while their accomplices have tried to snatch ballots. Unknown individuals have tried to snatch some ballots, prompting the Army soldiers on site to fire warning shots. The snatchers' accomplices, who were waiting in the vicinity of the school, returned fire to cause a commotion.”
It said the gunmen fled the area empty-handed though, leaving their snatched ballots outside the polling precincts.
There were also reports of strafing in Sumisip town
where gunmen opened fire in two polling places and also in the town of Tabuan
