ZAMBOANGA CITY – Mayor Beng Climaco has ordered an investigation into a small fire near her office on Wednesday, saying it could be an act of sabotage or failed arson after probers found a cigarette butt inside a box of discarded wires and electronic parts where the blaze began.
The mayor said the prompt response of members of the Civil Security Unit and employees at City Hall prevented what could have been a catastrophic fire inside the century-old building in downtown Zamboanga.
Quick responders saw a smoke billowed from the exit door of the mayor’s office leading to the pantry and quickly extinguished the fire.
“The fire originated from a box containing junk wires and some electronics placed on the side of the back door exit that connects to the pantry. Alert members of the City Security Unit and some employees used fire extinguishers to contain the fire, preventing greater damage,” Climaco said. “A cigarette butt, suspected to have caused the thick smoke, was recovered from the box by fire probers.”
Work at the City Hall was disrupted by the fire and employees were told to evacuate the building and returned to work an hour later after fire fighters combed the area for any combustible materials.
Climaco did not provide details of
her suspicion of sabotage, but smoking is forbidden at City Hall. It was
unknown whether the culprit was caught on security cameras. (Zamboanga Post)
