COTABATO CITY – Security forces killed an alleged financier of the pro-ISIS group Dawlah Islamiya in a clash in the town of Datu Saudi Ampatuan in the restive Muslim province of Maguindanao.
Abdulfatah Omar Alimuden, alias Abu Huzaifah, was slain on Monday, but security officials did not provide details of the operation that led to the killing of the terrorist, who also served as the spokesman of the group, blamed for the series of deadly attacks on civilian and military targets in the region.
The group was also involved in the five-month siege of Marawi City in Lanao del Sur province which also part of the Muslim autonomous region on May 23, 2017.
The military’s Western Mindanao Command also said five members of the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf also surrendered in Sulu’s Patikul town over the weekend. The surrender was through the efforts of the 45th Infantry Battalion and the local police force and the municipal government.
Those who surrendered were only identified by their first name, Bennajir, 24; Monib, 24; Abdurahsi, 48; Rudy, 36; and; Sattari, 33. They also surrendered three rifles, and a .45-caliber pistol, according to Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario, Jr., chief of the Western Mindanao Command.
“The influx of surrenders of former rebels and violent extremists is attributed to good governance and the unwavering support of the peace-loving people of Sulu,” he said, adding at least 44 terrorists had surrendered the past six months in the province and were provided livelihood assistance by the local and provincial governments.
