ZAMBOANGA CITY – Gunmen shot dead Friday the father of a prominent doctor who killed the former mayor of Lamitan City in the southern Philippine province of Basilan, police said.
Police said two motorcycle gunmen attacked Rolando Yumol – the father of Dr Chao Yumol - in front of his house in Lamitan City. He died on the spot.
The assailants escaped after the shooting, but police would not say whether the killing was connected to the murder of Rosita Furigay, wife of Lamitan City Mayor Roderick Furigay.
The former mayor was killed by the doctor on July 24 while attending the graduation of her daughter Hanna at the Quezon City campus of the Ateneo de Manila University. Furigay’s aide Victor George Capistrano, and Jeneven Bandiola, a security guard of the Ateneo de Manila, were also killed in the attack and wounded the former mayor’s daughter.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for Friday’s attack.
Police said it filed criminal charges against the killer of the former mayor, who previously worked at a clinic in Lamitan. Yumol is locked in a legal battle with the Furigays. He was previously ambushed while driving his bullet-proof car in Zamboanga City in December 2020. He was unhurt in the ambush. (Mindanao Examiner)
