2 soldiers wounded in shooting inside camp

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police said two army soldiers were rushed to hospital following a shooting incident inside the camp of the 97th Infantry Battalion in Zamboanga del Norte’s Piñan town.

Maj. Shellamie Chang, the regional police spokeswoman, said Sergeant Ryzan Alasaas Salota, 34, was shot in the back by Sergeant Jemar Lagrosa Bugay, 32, who then shot himself in the head.

The incident, Chang said, occurred over the weekend, but the motive of the shooting remains unclear. “Initial investigation disclosed that prior to the incident, the suspect was at the bunk of the victim and then he suddenly shot the victim in closed range hitting his back, afterwards he then shot himself in the head,” she said.

Chang said despite his injury, Salota managed to run outside his bunker and sought help from his superior - saying “Sir, tabang gepusil ko sa akung ka batch,” (Sir, help me, I was shot by my batch mate) - before collapsing.

The gun used in the shooting was also recovered – a .45-caliber pistol loaded with a magazine – and a cellular phone owned by the shooter.

“Both the victim and suspect were immediately brought to Zamboanga del Norte Hospital by their comrades. PNP personnel of Pinan Municipal Police Station are still conducting a thorough investigation to establish the motive of the incident,” Chang said.

The condition of the two soldiers were not immediately known and both the 1st Infantry Division and Western Mindanao Command did not even report the incident.

Police said Salota is a native of Sipak village in Sapang Dalaga town in Misamis Occidental province while Bugay is a Dilawa village in Zamboanga del Norte’s Piñan town. (Mindanao Examiner)
