4 killed in Basilan attacks

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Four people were killed and three others wounded in separate gun attacks in the restive Muslim province of Basilan in southern Philippines.

Gunmen sprayed a shack with automatic weapons and killed three members of the Taalil family and wounded three more, among them a child. The attack occurred at dawn Thursday in the town of Guiong in Sumisip town while the victims were asleep.

The motive of the attack is still unknown. By noon, motorcycle gunmen also shot dead a 59-year old trader, Jemmy Talamon, in Lumuton village in Lamitan City.

The former village official was driving his motorcycle when tailed by the gunmen who shot him from behind, killing him on the spot.

No groups or individuals claimed responsibility for both shooting incidents, but gun attacks are not uncommon in Basilan, one of five provinces under the Bangsamoro autonomous region, due to the presence of hired killers and rebel groups, and the proliferation of illegal weapons. (Al Jacinto)
