Police said the 35-year old Abubakar Abdulkadil alias Basaron Arok was arrested in his house in the village of San Raymundo in the capital town of Jolo. The operation was mounted by the 7th Special Action Battalion, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, the Jolo Municipal Police Station and the Sulu Police Provincial Office.

Maj. Dominador Mauricio, commander of the 7th Special Action Battalion, said Abdulkadil is facing a string of criminal charges – from frustrated murder to multiple murders and kidnappings, and is a follower of Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Majid Said whose group is operating in the towns of Talipao, Indanan, Parang and Maimbung.

Abdulkadil is on the list of most wanted criminal in Sulu and is also being sought by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) for his involvement in kidnappings on Sabah’s east coast.

There are a total of 21 Abu Sayyaf names remaining on the Esscom wanted list. Esscom said Abdulkadil, a native of Patikul town, is also the leader of the Ajang-Ajang group in Sulu.

As of updates in May, there are a total of 21 names remaining on the Esscom wanted list.

It was not immediately known whether Malaysia will seek the extradition of Abdulkadil to face court trial in Sabah. (Fatma Jinno, Radyo Pilipinas Jolo; and The Mindanao Examiner.)
