ZAMBOANGA CITY - Nearly P500 million worth of smuggled cigarettes had been seized by aurhorities the past 10 months in Zamboanga Peninsula and the Muslim provinces of Basilan, Sulu amd Tawi-Tawi.
The Bureau of Customs (BoC) in Zamboanga City said a total of P449.713 million worth of assorted cigarettes were confiscated in the anti-smuggling operations in collaboration with security forces.
The BOC said in the first two weeks of this month, anti-smuggling operations netted some 5,358 boxes of untaxed cigarettes worth P187.5 million.
In summary, the BOC reported confiscating a total of P56,966,000 worth smuggled cigarettes in January; P10,549,700 in February; P11,879,000 in March; P26,152,000 in April; P31,706,500 in May; P45,210,200 in June; P21,428,400 in July; P26,057,500 in August; and P32,234,300 in September.
The BOC said it also collected P8.6 billion as of October 14 and may likely to reach its target revenues of P10 billion by the end of the year.
Despite its intensified operations, the BOC did not say how many people had been charged in court. It also did not say who were behind the unabated smuggling of contraband in the region. (Mindanao Examiner)
